A group of us headed to Rehoboth Beach, DE, for our friend Al’s bachelor party at Dogfish Head. In the morning, we set out to find coffee, and I recalled seeing a Fractured Prune doughnut shop the previous night. The Fractured Prune is an East Coast doughnut chain that was started in Ocean City, MD, and features fresh, made-to-order doughnuts.

At The Fractured Prune, doughnuts are made very fresh using the “Donut Robot” machine. You can select from a wide variety of flavored icing/topping combinations which are individually applied to your fresh doughnuts. We ended up with a dozen of these. While not the most transcendent doughnut I’d ever had (those are all at The Doughnut Plant), these were quite good. I liked that they were a little smaller sized so you could easily eat two and not grow a food baby in your stomach.

The Dirty Dozen

The Dirty Dozen

Of our dozen, quite a few were the Sand Doughnut, recommended by the woman at the counter, who said they were the most popular. These doughnuts were just an icing glaze with cinnamon and sugar on top. Quite simple, but very good since they were nice and warm. We also had the Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chip doughnuts featured in the top photo, a classic flavor combination and even better when the doughnuts are still warm and the icing is melting slightly.

We did get a Mint Chocolate Chip doughnut, and that was probably the strangest combination – not that mint and chocolate isn’t a classic combination, it just doesn’t work extremely well for a doughnut at breakfast time. I think the strange deep-green icing color is a little off-putting, too.

Rounding out our dozen was the Banana Nut Bread doughnut with banana-flavored glaze, nut topping, and cinnamon and sugar. Banana doughnuts are definitely overlooked, and the flavor works very well in combination with nuts on top.

There are a few different locations for franchises in The Fractured Prune empire. In spite of insisting on the spelling of doughnut as “donut” and shop as “shoppe,” The Fractured Prune is creating wonderful fresh-made doughnuts with interesting and delicious flavor combinations. You can’t go wrong with warm doughnuts, especially in many of the flavor combinations that we tried.

Many thanks to Josh for picking up the dozen.

Verdict: Solid doughnuts with a lot of flavor options.
