New Englander

Super Duper Neon
Jessica and I visited Super Duper Weenie a little after our visiting both Sam’s N.Y. System and Frank Pepe’s on our way home from Boston, way back in October. I apologize for the lateness in posting this review.

Super Duper Weenie
Super Duper Weenie started as a hot dog cart in 1992. In 1999, they decided to make a permanent location. Now, Super Duper Weenie is quite close to I-95, making it easy for a quick stop if you need a hot dog fix. Jessica was full from our other adventures, so I was on my own. I decided to get a New Englander dog with an order of hand-cut fries.

Dog Detail

Sack of Steaming Fries
The New Englander is a dog with sauerkraut, bacon, mustard, sweet relish, and raw onion. The hot dogs are in a natural casing and made from a mix of beef and pork. They’re butterflied and griddled. The sweet relish is made from scratch from their own house-made pickles. The sauerkraut is spiced with toasted caraway and bacon. My only real complaint with the New Englander would be with the thin cut, somewhat limp full-slice of bacon. It was added a strange texture to the dog experience. Otherwise, the rest of the toppings worked well.
The fries were freshly hand-cut and thin, twice cooked for a nice crispness on the outside. They were steaming hot in the sack. The fries did taste quite good, probably in the flavor realm of Five Guys’ fresh-cut fries.
Super Duper Weenie is holding to tradition as much as possible making many items fresh in-house. They deserve a lot of respect for that, most definitely. I’m not sure I’m completely sold on butterflying hot dogs on the griddle, either, but the New Englander wasn’t a poor choice. I do think some of the other combinations may be better and I’m up for future exploring. I’m regretting not getting a chili dog with house-made chili. It is going to be hard not to stop if I ever find myself cruising past on I-95 when Super Duper Weenie is open.

The Fourth Dimension
Verdict: Super Duper Weenie is a worthwhile stop on I-95 for a good dog and hand-cut fries.
