Two Turtle Doves
Merry Christmas.
My Christmas beer favorite for 2009 is 2 Turtle Doves from The Bruery in Placentia, CA. I had this on tap one special Bruery tasting evening at the Blue Dog in Lansdale, PA with my friends Amy and Al. It kept us warm and made for a very pleasant outing.
This is the second Christmas beer from The Bruery, the first being 2008′s Partridge in a Pear Tree, their inaugural year as a brewery. 2 Turtle Doves is a malty Belgian dark ale that’s brewed with cocoa nibs and toasted pecans and has a bit of a Christmas spice flavor. The chocolate taste is subtle, coloring the rich caramel, malty flavor. It’s quite strong clocking in at 12%. A perfect beer for cold, dark winter nights, though brewed in sunny southern California.
Also at the special Bruery tasting, I had a glass of the rare Mischief #3 slightly hoppy Belgian-style golden ale and, then later in the week, got to try their Rugbrød rye-based Danish brown ale brewed in the Danish Christmas beer or Julebryg style, which may be the only rye-based beer I’ve actually truly liked. I think I’ve had most, if not all, of The Bruery’s bottled beers and am quite impressed by this new brewery.
