The Kinako Ohagi Kit Kat was one of several purchased from NapaJapan. I was excited to try this one based on how much I enjoyed the previous Kinako Sweet Soy Kit Kat Bar. This was a full-sized Kit Kat and came in the standard glossy cardboard package with two foil-lined plastic packages of twin Kit Kats. Jessica and I tasted this Kit Kat this past Sunday. Ohagi is Japanese snack that is made by layering kinako paste around a rice ball, then coated with a small layer of soy flour and fried.

When I opened the package, the Kit Kats smelled like roasted peanuts or peanut butter. The Kinako Ohagi Kit Kats are milk chocolate based. The flavor was very similar to peanuts or peanut butter with a slightly heavier roasted quality with a different taste in the finish, maybe a little bit like malt. Jessica wasn’t so sure about the maltiness, but, in any case, it wasn’t entirely peanut butter like.

This was a great Kit Kat and, in spite of sounding very exotic, really did not taste strange at all. I would definitely get any Kit Kat with kinako.

Here are some additional reviews: Japanese Snack Reviews, Pocky Watch, Jen Ken’s Kit Kat Blog. Apparently there are mochiko puffs (rice puffs) embedded in the chocolate, though I didn’t seem to notice them.
