Sakuranbo Cherry Kit Kat

Sakuranbo Cherry Kit Kat

The Sakuranbo Cherry Kit Kat and the Yamagata Sakuranbo Cherry Mini Kit Kat were two of the Kit Kats that we ordered from NapaJapan. Since they were named very similarly, we suspected that the flavors would also be similar, so we tried them together. Incidentally, Sakuranbo is Japanese for Cherry.

First up was the Sakuranbo Cherry Kit Kat, the full-sized Kit Kat. This was packaged in the deluxe glossy cardboard that held two foil-lined plastic packages of twin Kit Kats. When I opened one of the packs, there was a sweet floral scent, not too strong. This was a white chocolate Kit Kat and a light pink color. The flavor was similar to the Cherry Blossom Kit Kat. It was sweet and mostly floral tasting with not a lot of cherry, but some cherry in the mix. I thought it was a bit similar to cotton candy.

The Yamagata Sakuranbo Cherry Mini Kit Kat was next. This is a rarer Kit Kat and specific to the Yamagata region. When I opened the package, there was a stronger fruity smell to the Kit Kat. The taste of this Kit Kat was stronger than the fairly mellow Sakuranbo Cherry Kit Kat. This Kit Kat tasted more like cherries, but was still mostly sweet.

So in the head to head taste-off between Sakuranbo Cherry Kit Kats, the one from Yamagata definitely had a stronger cherry taste. I am a little disappointed in the choice to have these be white chocolate based, rather than milk chocolate. The stronger cherry chocolate flavor could be a good one.

Here are more reviews of the Sakuranbo Cherry Kit Kat: Pretty Pretty Yum Yum, Tasty Japan, and Japanese Snack Reviews. The rarer Yamagata regional variety does not seem to have reviews.
